Your body is a machine and needs food every 4 hours to keep your blood sugar stable and keep you off the roller coaster of highs and lows. If you have carbs without protein , your blood sugar goes up and your pancreas sees that and releases alot of insulin. Then your blood sugar goes into your cells and your blood sugar drops and you are tired. So you use caffeine/sugar to get another boost of energy and the cycle repeats.
